We promote science, research and education and want to drive industrial innovation. We enable pre-competitive knowledge exchange between science, research and industry.
fortiss is the research institute of the Free State of Bavaria for software-intensive systems with headquarters in Munich. Our scientists collaborate on research, development and transfer projects with universities and technology companies in Bavaria, Germany and Europe. Our research is focused on state of the art methods, techniques and tools of software & systems engineering and their application to reliable, secure cyber-physical systems, such as the Internet of Things (IoT). fortiss has the legal structure of a non-profit limited liability company (GmbH). Its shareholders are the Free State of Bavaria (as majority shareholder) and the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research.
We design and develop complete robot system-solutions: e.g.
- Innovative human-robot systems, robot-machining, assembling, automation and mobile-applications
- Gesture4Work: industrialized gesture control ( detection of dynamic/static gestures, robot control and safety sensor integration)
• We develop software und plug-in tools from scratch: e.g:
- Safety-related digital twins and user-friendly platform for dynamic risk assessment of agile manufacturing systems - Plug-In Tools for calculation/visualization of compact safety areas, automatic planning/optimizing of (multi-) robot paths
• We develop innovative algorithms:
- Cognitive robot systems using multiple intelligent sensor systems
(2D/3D Camera, LiDAR, Radar, infrared camera etc.) - Intuitive robot programming (NoCode) using "Leaning by demonstration" approaches and gesture control
- Online-Ergonomic evaluation, UI / UX design and human-centered assistance systems
• We provide mediation support for companies interested in robotics, work with them to understand their challenges, develop a solution
and suggest technology providers who can help implement a solution
• We provide support to upgrade a successful experiment to the next level (start-up / scale-up expertise, business expertise, access to finance, incubator support services, internationalisation, marketing, market assessments, trend analysis, co-creation, value chain, etc.)
• We act as consulting contractor for clients such as Chambers of Industry and Commerce as well as Crafts Chambers, e.g. we advised the Chamber of Crafts on the implementation of robotic solutions in regional SMEs
Fraunhofer IPA – one of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s largest institutes – was founded in 1959 and employs nearly 1200 workers. The focus of our research and development work is on organizational and technological issues related to the manufacturing industry. We develop, test and implement methods, components and devices right up to entire machines and production lines. Fraunhofer IPA’s 19 specialist departments cover the entire field of manufacturing engineering. They are coordinated by six business units and work on an interdisciplinary basis with industrial enterprises from the following sectors: automotive, machinery & equipment, electronics & microsystems, energy, medical engineering & biotechnology, and the process industry.
Logistics consulting by specialists: Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics advises companies of all industries and sizes in all questions about material flow and logistics. For our customers we offer widespread services: As consultants we support in fulfilling new tasks and meeting requirements, as researchers we work out new solutions together with our customers, as planners we help to optimize the internal and external logistics and as developers we realize solutions in soft- and hardware. In the process, Fraunhofer IML focuses on company-specific, made-to-measure solutions and accompanies its customers from planning to implementation.
