Green-Tech Cluster or Green and Smart Technology Cluster is organization developed for cross-sectoral cooperation bringing together companies, educational and research institutions, as well as other organizations that partly or fully operate in the industries of green and smart technologies. The cluster includes industries important to the sustainable development of Latvia, which also are priority sectors of smart specialization strategy: mechanical engineering and engineering, information, and communication technology and space technology, energy-efficient buildings, efficient production and environmentally-friendly raw materials. This synergy ensures efficient use of available resources and allows to achieve the most efficient development of Latvian economic environment. Cluster brings together one of the fastest growing companies with a significant share of exports and potential for development of the Latvian economy in priority sectors.
The EDI Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) is an integral part of a non-profit public research institute the “Institute of Electronics and Computer Science” (EDI), which was founded in 1960. EDI is specializing in the development of Smart Embedded Cooperative Systems (SECS) in the fields of health, mobility, production and space, and through dedicated R&D and technology transfer activities brings various technologies to companies worldwide.
Currently, EDI is part of 6 DIHs (including two European DIH (E-DIH) and two Horizon 2020 projects), which provide an opportunity to help dozens of companies to develop new or transform existing technologies, products and services as well as allow to increase productivity and quality, reduce costs, establish new markets, etc.
The main aim of EDI DIH is to facilitate the exploitation of our technologies and know-how, meanwhile helping companies to digitize, thus allowing them to develop new or transform existing technologies, products and services as well as to increase productivity and quality, reduce costs, establish new markets, etc. Our ambition is to establish a long-term collaboration with companies, ensuring sustainability in research directions and constant demand for our services.
EDI DIH was (is) managed mostly by the EDI management team: EDI Director Modris Greitāns and Deputy director of development Kaspars Ozols, who both have considerable experience not only in research and development of various technologies but also in project management, management of resources and IPR, innovation activities and commercialization/technology transfer. If there is a company interested in EDI services, after discussion with a company, a dedicated researcher (or a team) is involved in the project.
EDI DIH provides the following services: test before investing (strategic support to research, development and innovation, contract research, technical support on scale up, testing and validation, provision of infrastructure, test EDI technologies before investing), support to find investment (support to find appropriate funding programs, strategic and business development, support facilities and accelerator support), innovation ecosystem and networking (ecosystem scouting, engagement and management, ecosystem coordination for projects), and skills and training.
EDI-DIH provides its services for the following market sectors: agriculture, forestry, construction, transport, communication, information technology, electronics, healthcare, and manufacturing.
To reach our potential customers worldwide, EDI DIH exploits opportunities provided by the public EDI website, social media, development of presentation materials, press releases, posters, presentations, demonstrators, participation as an invited speaker, organization of conferences, workshops, exhibitions and other events, publishing of scientific publications, education and training activities, guided tours, etc.
Strategically, EDI is very much interested in expanding collaboration with industry (incl. SMEs) and providing its services to them of the best possible quality.
Currently, EDI is the highest-rated scientific institution in Latvia in the field of engineering and technologies. Our mission is to perceive the world and design a better future by creating new knowledge, developing innovative technologies, and demonstrating their practical significance in real-life applications. This mission drives a scientific staff of over 100 people, who are organized in four laboratories: Signal Processing; Space Technology; Robotics and Machine Perception; and Cyber-Physical System labs.
At EDI we believe that our future world will be even more connected, digital and automated than ever, forming various ambitious challenges to achieve, e.g. personalized predictive and preventive healthcare; flexible, efficient, connected and autonomous (zero defect) factories; safe (zero fatalities), affordable, sustainable, connected, cooperative, automated and clean (zero emissions) mobility; secure, safe and trustable connectivity and system interoperability; to name a few, which will impact the everyday life of citizens and all business sectors. At EDI we have a unique perspective, expertise, and capacity to contribute to solving all these challenges on a global scale. The key driving force of EDI scientific activities is its economic and social impact; therefore, we apply our SECS expertise in mobility, industry, health, digital life, and space domains. Meanwhile, we are focusing on the following research directions: extremely precise event timing; remote sensing and space data processing; robotics and machine perception; signal processing and embedded intelligence; smart sensors and IoT.
Our expertise is complemented by close collaboration with 300+ international partners. EDI has coordinated and participated in numerous EU projects (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, EIT, ECSEL, KDT, ERA-NET, CHIST-ERA, COST, etc.).
Foundation Ventspils High Technology park has just been approved as a European Digital Innovation Hub.
Our DIH provide the necessary infrastructure and support for the development of high-technology businesses in the city of Ventspils and the outlying region.
DIH in Ventspils helps regional companies to become more competitive by improving their business processes as well as services and products by means of digital technology.
The services available through DIH in Ventspils may be categorised as:
Awareness and Skills Creation;
Knowledge and Networks;
Co-creation Infrastructure;
Collaborative Research;
Business Development.
The market sectors covered by DIH in Ventspils today include high-tech and mid-tech manufacturing industries (e.g., ICT, machinery and equipment, electrical and optical equipment). We plan to upgrade existing DIH in Ventspils by meeting wider needs of regional economy and setting-up the fully operational DIH in specific ICT competencies (robotics and automation) and Edtech.
